Chapter Fourteen

“I’m so sorry you had to eat a cold dinner,” Ashton said as she and Shawna took a seat on her couch.

“It was just as delicious cold as it was hot. That’s why I didn’t want you to warm it.” Shawna took a sip of her wine and smiled. “I’m so glad we’ve gotten our first fight behind us.”

Ashton shook her head. “I still haven’t forgiven you for insisting on doing the dishes, so we’re not over that hurdle yet. I didn’t help you clean up after lunch yesterday.”

“I rinsed off the sandwich and veggie trays and tossed them in the recycling bin. It nearly broke my arm to do it, and I had to walk from the sink all the way to the bin. That was an exhausting two steps.”

“I like this sarcastic version of you, Shawna 2.0. You speak your mind now, and it’s kind of intoxicating.”

“I’m happy to hear that.” Shawna raised her wineglass. “Speaking of, I can’t have any more of this after I finish this glass. I need to be able to drive home because I have an eleven o’clock curfew.”

“What happens if you’re late?”

Shawna chuckled. “I’ll probably just get fussed at. The only reason I’m willing to obey is because you both have school tomorrow, and I know Jet is gonna wait up.”

“Do you remember the time we went down to the marsh with those guys that Patty and Cassie made out with while we sat on the hood of your car?”

“They did a lot more than just make out,” Shawna said with a laugh.

‘“Oh, Cassie, yes, Cassie, no teeth, no teeth,’” Shawna and Ashton said almost in unison.

Ashton threw back her head and laughed. “I remember the look on your face when that started. “It was a cross between horror and disgust.”

“Yeah, because that guy was sitting in my seat.”

“We had so many mosquito bites we looked like we had the chickenpox.” Ashton took a drink of her wine. “I think we sat on the hood of your car for hours, and I don’t even remember what we talked about, but we had a good time. That’s when you loosened up and really started talking to me.”

“I remember laughing a lot. I also remember that my car smelled like sex and hamburgers, and I was late getting home. My dad was waiting for me in the driveway, smoking and pacing. He opened the door, stuck his head inside, and asked me where I’d been, then he said, ‘What the hell stinks so bad in here?’ I was in kind of a panic and pointed to your softball gear bag. You left it on the floorboard of the passenger’s side.”

Ashton’s eyes flew open wide. “You made your dad think I smelled like sex and hamburgers?”

“Somebody had to take one for the team.” Shawna cracked up.

“That’s so embarrassing.” Ashton downed her wine and set her glass on the coffee table. “I hope he has a bad memory now.”

“Nope, he’s still sharp.” Shawna laughed harder when Ashton scowled at her.
